Common Questions

Straight answers about leaving a legacy at Seattle Colleges.

Questions and answers

Does my gift have to be large to matter?

No. Gifts of every size are deeply appreciated. Many donors choose to leave a percentage of their estate rather than a fixed dollar amount, so the gift scales up or down with whatever their estate turns out to be. A single $5,000 scholarship can be the difference between a student finishing and a student walking away.

Should I tell the Foundation about my plans?

Yes, please, if you’re comfortable doing so. Knowing your intentions helps us document your gift and use it exactly as you wish. If you’d rather keep your plans private, or remain anonymous, we respect that.

Can I direct my gift to a specific college or program?

Yes. The Seattle Colleges Foundation serves North Seattle College, Seattle Central College, and South Seattle College, along with the Georgetown Campus, NewHolly Campus, Health Education Center, Seattle Maritime Academy, and Wood Technology Center. You can direct your legacy gift to a single college, a program such as maritime training or apparel design, an existing scholarship, or the Seattle Colleges Fund for districtwide flexibility.

How can I get started making a will?

These online services can help you create or update a will.

These independent services are listed for convenience only. Seattle Colleges Foundation does not endorse or assume responsibility for any provider or its services. Consider consulting your own legal or tax adviser.

Can I change my mind later?

Yes. You can change a bequest or beneficiary designation at any time, as your circumstances change. Telling us about a gift creates no legal obligation.

What information will my attorney need?

Our legal name is Seattle Colleges Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located at PO Box 20069, Seattle, WA 98102. Our federal tax identification number (EIN) is 83-0551671. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Jon Fine & Paula Selis

A legacy gift for student completion

Jon Fine and Paula Selis have built their lives around public service, and now they’re turning that same commitment toward Seattle Colleges students with a powerful set of planned gifts. Their estate plans will fuel two funds: the Districtwide Completion Scholarship and the new Jon Fine and Paula Selis Endowment for Student Completion, both focused on students in their final one or two quarters who need a last financial push to finish strong and step confidently into the region’s economy.

Jon Fine, Immediate Past Chair of the Seattle Colleges Foundation, led United Way of King County as CEO for nearly 19 years and co-chaired the Foundation’s Equity Can’t Wait campaign. Paula Selis is a former senior attorney in the Washington State Attorney General’s Office and a trusted civic leader.
